Introduction to Industrial Organizational Psychology (IOP) Individuals, Organizations, and the Social Context of Work Analyze the Case Study in Work Motivation and Attitude Defining Work Motivation Fundamental to the study of Industrial-Organizational (I-O) Psychology is the understanding of what motivates employees within an organization. According to Nevid (2013), motivation is defined as factors that activate, direct, and sustain goal-directed behavior. Motives are the whys of behavior - the needs or wants that drive behavior and explain what we do. We dont actually observe a motive; rather, we infer that one exists based on the behavior we observe (Nevid, 2013).â⬠Theories of work motivation explain why people work hardâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦As such, the level in which the workplace engages an employee can impact their desire to learn new skills and impacts their motivation level to perform successfully. The combination of skills and motivation has an influence on the employeeââ¬â¢s: * Error rate * Output rate * Level of innovation * Collaboration with teammates * Absenteeism * Length of employment The case of 58 year old Lydia is an example of an employee whose motivation dwindled significantly despite multiple promotions and increase of responsibilities. Multiple life-related factors and significant changes potentially played a role in Lydiaââ¬â¢s downhill trend. She went from being a mother and wife to an empty nester and widowed. It is evident that Lydia was well liked and respected not only by her colleagues and by her management, proven by her multiple promotions. So what went wrong? We look to motivation theory to provide some possible explanations. Countless people hold jobs that they dont necessarily enjoy, but continue with them because of the money, health benefits, etc. that they get in exchange for their time and energy.
